11/6 - The 2001 Denver League Banquet will be held on November 15th at the Old Chicago Restaurant located at 1280 South Colorado Boulevard. The banquet will begin at approximately 6:30 PM and will last up to 2 hours. The restaurant will provide a separate seating area for the league in their south room, and they will serve a special all-you-can-eat pizza buffet. Their deep-dish pizza is fantastic, and the price for adults is $8.49, which includes soft drinks. Separate bar tabs will be handled by their wait staff for those of you who wish to sample their great selection of 110 brews and other spirits. Childrens prices (under 12) are $4.49. If you wish to order a dinner salad, the price is only $1 more. Please RSVP to your team manager, if he hasn't contacted you already.
9/24 - The Denver Bears defeated the Colorado Codgers 13-5 to win the 50A League Championship. Ralph Noistering and Esteban Rodriguez each hit 2 home runs to rally the Bears, after falling behind 5-0 after 2 innings of play.
9/17 - The Colorado Gray Sox repeat as 50AA League Champions after defeating the Old Chicago Cubs 7-4. The Gray Sox become the first Denver Over 50 Baseball team to complete a perfect season, with a record of 14-0. Congratulations go out to all members of the Gray Sox, and Denver Over 50 Baseball wishes them great success at the NABA National Tournament in Phoenix next month.
In 50A action, the Denver Bears defeated the North Stars 10-1 and will participate in their first championship game since 1998. A special thank you and congratulations goes out to the Colorado Codgers. Although the Codgers could have taken a "walk-over" forfeit win over the Wild West Coots, the players on the Codgers voted to play instead. That is the true spirit of Over 50 Baseball! They decided as a team to allow a substitute player to participate for the Coots, who could only get 7 players by game time. The end result was still a Codgers win by the tight score of 13-12. The Codgers are the first expansion team to play in a championship game. Next Sunday's (9/23) 50A Championship Game will start at 12:00 Noon.
9/13 - Although the horrific events on the east coast this week have dampened the spirit of playing baseball, this weekend's Sunday playoff schedule will be played. A brief moment of silence to honor our fellow Americans who have lost their lives should be observed before each game.
9/8 - Because of extremely poor field conditions due to rain, all playoff games scheduled for September 9th have been postponed until Sunday, September 16th. The same order of games and time slots will be observed.
8/27 - The schedule for Sunday, September 9th has been set, and there will be three playoff games on that day. Sandwiched between 2 semi-final 50A playoff games will be the 50AA championship game at noon pitting the Old Chicago Cubs @ Colorado Gray Sox. If the Gray Sox win, they will win the championship. If the Cubs win, a second championship game will be necessary on Sunday, September 16th, which will be played on the same date as the 50A championship game. If anyone would like to volunteer and announce the championship game on September 9th, please contact Howard, the league president by email. Traditional announcing procedures will be observed (no excessive verbiage required or desired).
8/20 - Please note that there will be no more scheduled games on any Saturday for the remaining playoff dates. However, if opposing managers would both prefer to play on a Saturday at 1:00 PM, please contact Howard ASAP after the schedule is published on this web page.
8/19 - The Colorado Gray Sox are just one (winning) game away from taking their second consecutive Denver Over 50 Baseball League 50AA Championship after defeating the Southside Fossils 17-7.
Also, the league bids adieu to the Golden Oldies (first team to complete their season) after being knocked out of the playoffs by the Old Chicago Cubs 14-2. However, the Golden Oldies vow to make a solid showing in Las Vegas, just like they did last year.
8/18 - By virtue of the Denver Bears victory over the Denver Juggalos by the score of 14-12, the Denver Bears are the 50A division winners. Kudos go out to Nelson King who was not only the winning pitcher, but he also hit two big home runs.
8/17 - If the Denver Bears defeat the Denver Juggalos on Saturday, August 18th, the Bears will win the 50A division title, since they have the tie-breaker advantage over the Colorado Codgers. This will be the first time since 1998 that the Bears have won a title. If the Bears lose, then the winner of the Colorado Codgers vs. Wild West Coots will win the division title.
8/12 - All managers and players should review the recent updates on the DENVER LEAGUE RULE ADDENDUMS. The most recent addendums are highlighted in green. Managers should encourage their players to read and observe these rules, especially those rules concerning safety. Many players are still running to the wrong first base on an infield play. Umpires are going to be stricter when enforcing this rule and will call the runner out automatically. In addition, the first baseman must not make any contact with the second 1st base or he may be cited for obstruction/interference.
8/5 - The Colorado Gray Sox, by virtue of their 11-7 victory over the Old Chicago Cubs, claim this year's 50AA Division Title. After last year's league championship, they're not "one-year wonders." Will they also repeat as league champions?
7/30 - This upcoming Sunday's game at 12 noon between the Old Chicago Cubs @ Colorado Gray Sox will determine the 50AA division winner. In order to win the division, however, The Old Chicago Cubs must win the game by 5 or more runs. Anything less and the Colorado Gray Sox will win a brand new division title trophy for their possession during the next year. The game between the Southside Fossils @ Golden Oldies, which follows the above division title game immediately, will determine the third place finisher before the start of the 50AA playoffs.
During this upcoming weekend's games, the 50A division will be reaching the half-way point of their second round-robin. Please note, that there will also be a brand new and similar division title trophy presented to the 50A division winner.
Of special note, Theresa MacGregor (Wild West Coots) was selected to and played for the U.S. National Women's Baseball Team during early July. The World Championships were held in Toronto and many of the games were played in the SkyDome. Besides the U.S. team, there were teams from Canada, Australia, and Japan. The U.S. defeated Japan in the championship game to claim the world title. Way to go, Theresa!!!
7/28 - Rich Carroll (Colorado Codgers) will be a contestant on NBC TV's "The Weakest Link" on Monday, August 6th at 8 PM. The show was just taped this past Monday (7/23). How did he do? You'll have to watch the show to find out! Rules prohibit revealing the results of that show before it airs on TV. This was the week of the Carrol's!!! (Read the next posting.)
7/26 - The 50AA All-Stars defeated the 50A All-Stars by the score of 16-3. Mike Carroll (Golden Oldies) was awarded the game MVP award on the strength of his 3 hit/2 rbi performance.
7/24 - The following players, managers, and coaches represent the Denver Over 50 Baseball League in this year's All-Star Game:
50AA - Colorado Gray Sox - Bob Bastiaans, Bob Bennett, Al Bucholtz, Eric Hall, Bill Smedberg (acting manager), Old Chicago Cubs - Steve Coble, Wayne Snow, Phil Towe, Golden Oldies - David Blakley, Howard Hankey, Mike Carroll, Southside Fossils - Terry Barton, Pat Bradley, Mark Buls, Ken Ayers (coach)
50A - Denver Bears - Joe Carriero, Kip Hardcastle, Ross Wilhite, Phil Field (manager), Colorado Codgers - Steve Umbro, Tim Hickey, Brian Turner, Don Olhausen (coach), Wild West Coots - Theresa MacGregor, Jerry Malberg, Bob Sims, Denver Juggalos - Mike Lundquist, Phil Gallegos, North Stars - Dave Bray, George Martinez
7/21 - The power-hitting contest that was originally scheduled for 6 PM on July 25th, just prior to the start of the All-Star Game has been postponed by the NABA because of logistical reasons. The NABA claims that a home run contest might be rescheduled at a later date this season. Details will follow.
7/21 - Players participating in the All-Star Game should report to Aurora Central Stadium no later than 6:30 PM for the 7 PM start. The 50A All-Star Team, managed by Phil Field (Denver Bears) will be designated as the home team (1st base dugout) and will wear white pants. The 50AA All-Stars, managed by Bill Smedberg (Colorado Gray Sox) will wear gray pants.
7/15 - The standings for the 50A league are now complete with the end of play in the first round-robin. Although the Codgers and the Bears tied for first place, the Bears win the first place position by virtue of winning in head-to-head play. The Juggalos tied the Coots for third place with identical records. However, since in head-to-head play they actually tied, runs scored against every team in the league is the rule in order to break that tie. The Juggalos gave up 108 runs, whereas the Coots gave up only 71 runs, thus the Coots control third place. Please note the completed schedule further below which will take each division up to the playoffs.
7/15 - If any manager or player notes a discrepancy or problem in the new updated schedule, please email your league president. However, corrections to this Internet schedule cannot be made until Friday, July 20th.
7/15 - The managers for the All-Star Game will come from the teams in first place for both 50A and 50AA divisions. For more information about the All-Star Game, please scroll down to July 25th.
7/8 - With one week to go (just 2 make-up games remaining) before the league officially breaks into 2 divisions, the 50AA division is now set, and the schedule listed further below for the second round-robin is now complete for that division only. Even if the Codgers win on July 15th and finish the first round-robin with an identical record as the Fossils (4-4), the Fossils earn the 50AA division's fourth place because they defeated the Codgers in head-to-head play. The only other team that will know their new schedule now is the North Stars, who have completed their 8 games in the first round-robin. Places one through four in the 50A division are still up for grabs as those 4 teams battle it out this coming weekend "jockeying for position." Please note, all teams in the 50A division (only) will be given an additional bye week, and the 50A regular season Division Winner will receive an additional bye at the start of the playoffs, as well. Also, each team's record in both divisions remains intact as we enter the second round-robin. The division winning managers of 50A and 50AA will both receive attractive trophy awards for their accomplishments before the playoffs begin. Those trophies will remain as property of the league and will be passed on to the new winner each year. A metal plate with the team name and year will be permanently attached to each appropriate trophy.
7/1 - As the first round-robin winds down, many managers and players have an idea about where their team will finish in the standings after play is completed on July 15th. Most importantly, if there is a tie between teams with identical records, the NABA Manager's Rulebook will be used to break any ties. Be sure to "brush up" on those tie-breaking rules. Don't be caught unaware and end up trying to explain to your teammates why your team finished lower than you anticipated.
7/1 - If there are players in the league who are interested in participating in the 2001 Over 50 Baseball National Fun Tournament in Las Vegas during October 21-28, please contact Howard (your league president) now for more information. Presently, there are 2 complete teams, but a third team is very possible. Even if you're not already on a team, you'll be assigned to a regional tournament-created team. Last year, a regional tournament-created team won the 50A division championship and another one was the 50AA runner-up.
6/24 - Please note the major changes that were just made to the second round-robin. If you have any questions, contact your league president ASAP.
