August 26 - All three division championships were decided during the past weekend. On Saturday in the 50A and 50AA divisions, the undefeated team in each winner's bracket was knocked from the ranks of unbeaten playoff teams, and a Sunday final championship game had to be played. On Saturday morning, the Fossils hung on to defeat the North Stars and force a final game, but the North Stars came back strong on Sunday afternoon to take the 50A championship. On Saturday in the early afternoon, the Wild West Coots upended the Golden Oldies and forced a final game the next morning. Although he had just pitched an entire game on Saturday, Mark Griffith went the distance again to bring to the Coots the 50AA title, their first division championship in five tries. The Colorado Classics had no such problem in the 50AAA division and won the highest championship level on Saturday, thus achieving the stature of being the only undefeated team in the entire league during the playoffs. Of special note, Dave Cicchon was not only the winning pitcher in the championship game, but he also hit his eleventh home run of the season and won the 2003 Home Run Derby.
It is the webmaster's intention to place all championship team pictures on this webpage. However, it was not possible for the webmaster to attend and photograph the winning teams in the Sunday championship games. Therefore, the only digital pictures that will be published to this webpage are of the teams in the 50AAA championship games. If anyone has 2003 team pictures of the North Stars and Coots, please email them to the webmaster and they will be permanently posted into the Colorado Over 50 Baseball League Webpage.
50AAA CHAMPIONS
50AAA RUNNER UP & DIVISION WINNER
August 17 - The championship games for all three divisions are set for the weekend of August 23-24 (see below). If the winner in any game on Saturday, August 23rd is the visiting team, the same two teams will square off again the very next day to decide the championship. If necessary, Sunday's game times will be established at the field while both teams are still present at the end of the game. Also, if the visiting team wins on Saturday, that team will then assume the role of the home team on Sunday. Obviously, if the home team wins on Saturday, the championship is decided and the season is over.
August 4 - As the playoffs got underway, mother nature has taken its toll on our field. What appears to have been a small tornado touched down late last week above the first base dugout and ripped the roof off, landing the structure on the adjacent bleachers causing significant damage. Also, the right field fence at the foul pole, the gate behind the backstop that is used to retrieve foul balls from Thornton city property, and the dark screen attached to the backstop were all damaged by the supposed and unpublicized tornado.
Please note, this week's 50A Division playoff games (only) have been flip-flopped from the way that they appeared last week in the 50A playoff model. Originally, all winner's bracket playoff games were to be played on Sunday, August 10th, and the loser's bracket were to be played on Saturday. By the way, after this week's upcoming games, 3 teams will have absorbed their second playoff loss, and their season will be over.
July 28 - The American Division defeated the National Division in the 5th Annual Colorado Over 50 Baseball League All-Star Game by the score of 21-12, in a game that was much closer than the score indicates. The game was tied at 10-10 after 7 innings, and the winner wasn't truly determined until the American Division scored 7 runs in the top of the ninth. Ten home runs were hit in the contest (the most ever in one game) and 2 home runs were hit by Mike McGuire (Golden Oldies), Ron Mares (Grey Sox), & Tom Mulloy (Colorado Classics). On the strength of Tom Mulloy batting 3 for 4, including a walk, 4 rbi's, and 4 runs scored, Tom was presented with a beautiful bronze sculptured All Star Game MVP Award by Dave Blakley (see below).
July 24 - The Grey Sox have won the 2003 Division Title for Colorado Over 50 Baseball. Although tied with the same overall record with the Classics and the Codgers, the Grey Sox defeated both of the other tied teams to claim first place. Who says that an expansion team can't win?
The playoff pairings for the weekend of August 2-3 are posted further below within the schedule.
On Sunday, July 27th at 11:00 AM, the fifth annual Colorado Over 50 Baseball All-Star Game will be played with much fanfare. During this special 3 hour, 9 inning game, the concession stand will be open, yours truly (the webmaster) will announce the game, providing between innings entertainment, and we will have a guest performer singing the National Anthem after player introductions. Sounds like a lot of fun! The All-Star Teams are comprised of the following elected/selected participants:
PLAYERS REPRESENTING THE AMERICAN DIVISION (visiting team)
CLASSICS: Mgr. Steve Umbro (absent-replaced by Terry Yochum), Dave Cichon (absent-replaced by Dave Garcia) John Damsma, Richard Grunewald, Tom Mulloy JUGGALOS: Robert Pershouse, Mark Rucker, Mike Sausser GOLDEN OLDIES: Don Carpenter, Mark Danuser, Mike McGuire, Dave Blakley (assistant coach) BEARS: Kip Hardcastle, Bob Heid NORTH STARS: Roy Friessen, Marty Stenzel ROUGH RIDERS: Lane Ryden (absent)

July 14 - According to the rules in the 2003 NABA Manager's Rulebook and Guidelines, along with a clarification of those rules as determined by the National Office of the NABA, as well as our League President and League Commissioner, the official standings are now posted.
Rule Explanation - When three or more teams are tied in the standings, head-to-head comparisons (of all four teams) are made first. The Grey Sox and the Classics had 2-1 records, whereas the Codgers and the Juggalos had 1-2 records. Therefore, the top 2 teams (the Grey Sox and the Classics) would be eligible for the highest ranking, and since the Grey Sox beat the Classics in head-to-head play, the Grey Sox have earned the #1 position in the standings. Since the Codgers and the Juggalos were tied with 1-2 records, the Codgers earn the #3 position since they beat the Juggalos in head-to-head competition.
As a result of the present standings, team assignments and allocations to the All-Star Game are now determined and posted as follows:
NATIONAL DIVISION (home team) - GREY SOX - 4 players (plus mgr.), CODGERS - 3 players, COOTS - 3 players, CUBS - 2 players, NORTH STARS - 2 players, RED SOX - 1 player
AMERICAN DIVISION (visiting team) - CLASSICS - 4 players (plus mgr.), JUGGALOS - 3 players, GOLDEN OLDIES - 3 players, FOSSILS - 2 players, BEARS - 2 players, ROUGHRIDERS - 1 player
Each league team must vote for their respective All-Star Game representatives this coming weekend (July 19-20) and report their all-star players to Howard Rollin no later than 9 PM on Sunday, July 20th.
THE FOLLOWING RULES (UPDATED WITHIN THE ADDENDUM) CONCERNING THE ALL-STAR GAME ARE NOW IN EFFECT
25. The 2003 All-Star Game will be held on Sunday, July 27th at Rebel Field. The game is scheduled to start at 11 AM. This year, the game will be 9 innings or 3 hours, whichever comes first. This will allow all players on both large teams enough at-bats and defensive playing time. After the games of the July 12-13 weekend are played (cut-off date), the standings (including 10 total games played by each team) will then determine the player allocations to the All-Star Game and which team those players will be placed on. All league teams must elect their representative players and report them to the league commissioner no later than the weekend of July 20-21. All player names and team assignments will be posted on the league webpage 6 days prior to the All-Star Game. Player allocations for each team, as well as team assignments for the All-Star Game, are as follows:
The National Division will be the home team (first base dugout) and will be comprised of players from the teams that finished in the following positions in the standings as of the close of play on July 13: first, third, fifth, seventh, ninth, & eleventh
The American Division will be the visiting team (third base dugout) and will be comprised of players from the teams that finished in the following positions in the standings as of the close of play on July 13: second, fourth, sixth, eighth, tenth, & twelfth
Allocations of players from each team is based upon their team's position in the standings as of the close of play on July 13. Each team will have a total of 15 players. The allocations are: First & Second Place - 4 players each, Third & Fourth Place - 3 players each, Fifth & Sixth Place - 3 players each, Seventh & Eighth Place - 2 players each, Ninth & Tenth Place - 2 players each, Eleventh & Twelfth Place - 1 player each.
The managers for each team will be the manager of the teams that are in first and second place as of the cut-off date. If the manager is not elected as a player, he will manage only and not play in the game. Each manager will select one coach from a non all-star participating manager from one of his assigned teams.
There will be no regularly scheduled or playoff games on All-Star Weekend. However, it may be necessary to schedule Saturday, July 26th as a regular season make-up date. League players not involved in the All-Star Game are not scheduled to play that weekend, but they are encouraged to attend and support this annual league event.
ATTENTION: IF YOU'VE SUBMITTED YOUR NAME TO THE NEW EMAIL LIST BUT YOU HAVEN'T RECEIVED A CONFIRMATION, PLEASE SEND AN EMAIL TO THE WEBMASTER: howard@over50baseball.com
May 11 - Postponed games that were originally scheduled on April 6th have now been moved to Saturday, June 14th (the day before Father's Day).
May 5 - Please note that tie games will be posted as a .5 win and a .5 loss for each team. The league has just experienced its first (ever) tie game when time expired.
April 27 - Howard Rollin, the webmaster, is being kept informed about "lost and found" clothing and equipment. If you have lost something or accidentally left something at any field, please contact Howard ASAP. Also, if you've picked something up that doesn't belong to you, please contact Howard, as well. Thank you. Items not claimed by the league banquet in November will be given away or discarded.
If you are the owner of a Rockies jacket that you accidentally left behind at a field during the pre-season (and which you can positively identify), it will be returned to you. Also, if anyone picked up a white Official Olympic Torch Bearer's jacket on Saturday April 12th, please contact Howard, as well.
April 19 - Because of inclement weather, the makeup games that were originally rescheduled for April 19th have now been tentatively moved to Saturday, May 10th, the day before Mother's Day. See schedule below.
April 13 - Starting Saturday, April 19th, scores must be reported to the webmaster by the manager or a member of the winning team no later than 9:00 PM on Sunday of a league play weekend. Otherwise, fines (now listed in the Rule Addendums) will be assessed and collected before the late-reported results will be posted! Although Saturday scores may be reported on Sunday, it is highly recommended that scores are reported as soon after a game has been completed.
Whether your team wins or loses, in order for league players to be credited for home runs that they hit, their manager or a designated player must report all home runs to the webmaster within 2 weeks after each homer. Late reporting of home runs may result in those "taters" as not being eligible for the HOME RUN DERBY.
April 6 - We're off and running! The first 3 league games have been reported by winning managers and are now posted below. Also, the 2003 "Home Run Club Web Page" is up and running. Just click on the link above. As in previous years, the league home run champion will be rewarded at the league banquet in November. Are you up to the challenge? Although the equidistant fence at Rebel Field looks very inviting, there was only a total of 5 home runs hit in the 3 games on opening day. That's less than 2 homers a game, which is what the average was last year.
All games that were scheduled on Sunday, April 6th, have been postponed until Saturday, April 19th (the day before Easter).
Please note the following updated Rule Addendums (#17 & #18) that concern field preperation and maintenance procedures. All players and managers should familiarize themselves with these requirements:
17. Before the first game of the day, each team will be required to supply 2 players to prep the field. The two team managers, working in conjunction with each other, should insure that the entire infield (fair and foul territory) should be dragged by a qualified pickup truck driver. The other 3 field-prep workers will assume other rake and drag responsibilities, including the preparation of the mound and home-plate areas, as well as chalking the foul lines for the entire game-day's usage. If there are trenches around home plate and on the mound, they should not be prepped by just pushing dry "beach sand" dirt back into the holes. Water must be used to solidify the dirt, and water is accessible by the use of a hose and quick-connect coupler (to be attached behind the mound). Please be careful and DO NOT MAKE MUD! Tamping of the slightly moistened filled-in areas is then necessary. If any aspect of field preparation for any game is substandard, then the teams that are then playing on their poorly prepped field will have nothing to complain about.
Each team is responsible for cleaning their own dugout after each game and then vacating the field and dugout areas ASAP. After the first and second games of each game day, it is very important that the next 2 teams get access to their respective dugouts and begin field preparation and warm-ups for their upcoming game.
Before the second and third game on game days, each team will also be required to supply 2 players to prep the field. The driver of the pickup truck will only drag the infield in fair territory and will avoid wiping out the foul lines. The other 3 field-prep workers will assume other rake and drag responsibilities, especially to protect the slightly worn and partially erased foul lines and to prep the mound and home plate areas.
18. At the end of the last game of the day, the winning team will be required to prep the mound and home plate areas only (water and tamping will be necessary). There will be no requirement to drag the infield. However, the winning team will also be required to store and lock up the 4 bases and all field maintenance equipment, and all "plugs" must be re-inserted into the base anchors. The losing team in the last game slot on Sunday (only) will be responsible to empty all of the trash cans by unhooking the drag on the pickup truck and loading up the trash cans to haul and empty them into the dumpster behind the Auto-Trol building. The trash cans should then be returned to their appropriate locations around the field, the pickup truck should be returned to its formerly parked position, and the drag should be re-hooked to the bumper.
March 28 - Please note the updated regular season schedule below. The Colorado Classics and the Golden Oldies have exchanged their complete schedules to avoid conflicts that resulted when Countryside Field could not be integrated into the normal regular-season schedule. All other team managers should now recognize that although their time slots have not changed, their opponent (Classics or Oldies) has "flip-flopped." Home and away assignments for all dates have not been affected.
Countryside Field will now be used on a limited basis as a back-up emergency location for make-up games, a Sunday practice field, and as a possible holiday tournament game field.
March 23 - "After much consultation, the decision has been made by Mike Carroll and Dave Blakley that all games this year will be played at Rebel Field (only) on Saturday and Sunday. This decision is final."
The official and updated schedule (further below) moved all Sunday games at Countryside Field to Rebel Field on the preceding Saturday.
If you wish to print the schedule, you can significantly reduce the number of pages printed by "copying and pasting" the schedule into your word processing program and then reducing the font size and adjusting blank lines appropriately before you print. If you need help, please contact the webmaster.
March 15 - Please note that the above schedule does not include the baseball field at Countryside (106th and Oak in Westminster). Negotiations for the use and especially the logistics of that field are still being discussed, and that has caused a postponement of that field's usage by our league.
March 15 - Parking at Rebel Field is restricted to the large unpaved parking lot directly east of the field behind the first base dugout. DO NOT PARK IN THE AUTO-TROL COMPANY PARKING LOT ADJACENT TO WASHINGTON STREET AND BEYOND THE LEFT FIELD FENCE. You must drive around the Auto-Trol building, by turning east on 126th Ave. and drive through the paved parking lot behind the building. Follow the narrow unpaved road slightly uphill past the right field foul pole and into our own parking lot. Games/practices will be stopped/suspended until vehicles are moved from illegal/improper parking spaces.
March 4 - Welcome to the new Colorado Over 50 Baseball League! In 2003, the Colorado league will play on its own private-property field. That means that the league is no longer subject to the problems resulting from leasing a field from a school or park district. Colorado Over 50 Baseball now controls its own destiny. Although the drought in the Denver Metro Area will seriously affect most outdoor adult sports programs, Colorado Over 50 Baseball may be the only adult baseball league that will be able to continue regular operations without any major restrictions. The foresight of the former and present league administration and team management members to pursue "a field of our own," has resulted in a win-win situation for all parties concerned.
March 9 - Tryouts and Draft for new players (originally scheduled for March 2nd, but snowed out). If you would like to join the league, please contact howard@over50baseball.com ASAP for all of the details. In case of inclement weather, the tryouts and draft will probably be postponed until the following weekend.
In order to save time, if you would prefer to access this web page directly without having to go through the Over 50 Baseball website's main page, please "save" this page as a "favorite" or "bookmark" this page in your browser. That will dramatically speed up the process each week when accessing the information on this web page. If you're not sure how to do it with your browser, please contact howard@over50baseball.com.
The league schedule and results are posted below. If you find any errors, please report it to the Webmaster immediately!
ALL LEAGUE AND PLAYOFF GAMES WILL BE PLAYED AT:
REBEL FIELD - 126th & WASHINGTON (THORNTON)
COUNTRYSIDE FIELD - 106th & OAK (WESTMINSTER) - FIELD USAGE IS LOGISTICALLY PROBLEMATIC AND CANNOT BE APPROVED ON A REGULAR BASIS FOR NORMAL LEAGUE PLAY. THIS FIELD WILL BE USED AS A BACK-UP FIELD.
