ALL LEAGUE GAMES ARE PLAYED AT DENVER WEST HIGH SCHOOL

(SPEER BOULEVARD AT 11th AVE. AND ELATI ST.)

(Updated 11/6) The Over 50 Baseball League Banquet will be held at 6:30 PM on Tuesday evening, November 23rd at The Country Harvest Buffet Restaurant, located at 740 Peoria Street in Aurora. This is the same buffet restaurant that was used last year. The price for the buffet is $7.09 (special senior baseball discount) plus tax and tip. Children (up through the age of 11) will be charged 55 cents per each year of age. If you plan to come, please let your manager know how many from your family, friends, etc. will be attending. Space is limited.

(Updated 9/27) The North Stars defeated the Ancient Mariners 17-10 and captured the league championship, to go along with the division title that they wrapped up in August. From "worst to first" has been the rallying cry of the men of the north. Congratulations to Mike Claps for enduring a most difficult year in 1998, and then recruiting a more powerful team to win it all in 1999. An extra congratulation goes out to Mike for his first Over 50 Baseball home run during the game. By the way, every manager and coach in the league this year has hit a home run with the exception of Bruce Schmid of the Bears who has now moved to Tacoma, Washington. (We wish him well, as the Bears search for a new manager.) Congratulations are also extended to the Ancient Mariners (runner-up) and their manager David Lasswell for making it to the championship game for the second year in a row. Also, Wayne Snow (Ancient Mariners) has won the HOME RUN DERBY with 4 home runs. That's the most "taters" by any one ballplayer in the 40A and 40B leagues and the Over 50 Baseball league as well. By the way, not one of Wayne's homers was a cheap shot, as he pulverized cars and terrified pedestrians on the far side of 11th Avenue. Lastly, the Over 50 Baseball League Banquet will be held in late November on a date that will not conflict with other post season baseball tournament schedules. Details will follow.

(Updated 9/27) The NORTH STARS will defend the honor of Over 50 Baseball as they accept the challenge of the mighty MAGIC (semi-finalist) from the 40B league on Sunday at 11:00 AM, October 3rd, on the Denver West High School field. The North Stars will be the home team, and Over 50 Baseball League Rules will be enforced for this exciting Interleague Championship Game. Bragging rights are on the line!!!

(Updated 9/23) As we go into the championship game on Sunday Sept. 26, the North Stars and the Ancient Mariners (playing against each other for the championship) possess the home run leaders for the league. The North Stars claim Tom Orin (first round draft choice), who has smacked 3 round-trippers, and the Ancient Mariners claim Wayne Snow, who leads the league with 4 bombs onto 11th Street and beyond. All home runs hit this year by all players are listed in the "Home Run Club Web Page." Home runs hit in the championship game will count toward season totals. Who do you think is going to win the Home Run Derby? By the way, the Ancient Mariners and the Gray Sox lead the league with 8 home runs hit by each team. There have been 28 home runs hit by all teams in the Denver Over 50 Baseball League.

(Updated 9/13) All remaining playoff time slots have been changed to 11:00 AM start times. This will insure warmer temperatures, dry field conditions, and less morning sun in the eyes of the fielders. Results and the next round pairings will be found further below.

(Updated 8/30) Players are needed for both the NABA 50 & Over Tournament in Phoenix (October 9-14) and the Over 50 Baseball Fun Tournament in Las Vegas (October 24-31). Contact Howard, your league director ASAP.

(Updated 8/22) On Wednesday, August 18th, Denver Public Schools mistakenly assumed the Denver Over 50 Baseball season was completed and roto-tilled all of the dirt cut-outs in the infield at West High School. Ralph Ogden (Colorado Gray Sox) discovered the grave mistake, when he had planned (on his own) to do field prep work for that past weekend's playoff games. Ralph Ogden, his Cambodian guest Theavy, and Howard Rollin (league director) spent many hours on Friday and Saturday repairing the torn-up field. Denver league players should thank Ralph Ogden the next time they see him, for his dedication and hard work to have made that past weekend's games a success.

(Updated 9/13) After we had bid him a fond adieu on his retirement, Over 50 Baseball welcomes back Larry Brown, our first Over 50 Baseball umpire. Without Larry, the league would never have been able to get started. Thanks, Larry!!!

(Updated 8/16) A big thank you goes out to Phil Field, Bruce Schmid (Denver Bears), and Randy Skiles (Fossils) for bringing lawn mowers and/or cutting the infield grass (on 2 different occasions) just before a game day during the regular season.

Special Note: Joe Naporella, one of our fine umpires was selected by Major League Baseball to be a supporting back-up base umpire on Sunday, July 11th at Coors Field for the Rockies-Angels game. Because of Joe's dedication to Over 50 Baseball, he still umpired the morning game at Denver West High School and then left for Coors Field immediately at the conclusion of our regular league game. Way to go, Joe!!! (By the way, don't be surprised to see Joe umpiring major league games next year.)

During July 3-5, an Over 50 Baseball All Star Team participated in the NABA Mile High Classic Tournament in the 40 and Over open division. This all star team played 4 games in three days, and the competition was younger (10 year average) and tough. Other than our own Over 50 Baseball All Stars, the other teams included the Over 40B All Stars, the Colorado Sox, and the Colorado Buffaloes. Although the Over 50 Baseball All Stars didn't win, they made a good showing and held a lead at some time during half of their tournament games. We should all be proud of their effort during the very hot holiday weekend. The Over 50 Baseball Tournament Team All Stars included the following participants:

Ancient Mariners - Phil Towe, Dave Blakely, Wayne Snow, Yates Powers, Billy Hufford, & Howard Rollin (mgr.)

North Stars - Fred Searle, Steve Coble, Warren Coble, Phil Gallegos, Harry Ellenbaas, & Dave Bray

Wild West Coots - Steve Hutchins & Errol Snyder

Colorado Gray Sox - Alan Bucholtz, Jim Ryken, & Eric Hall

Denver Bears - Bill Lindhorst, Ralph Noistering, & Mike Del Cupp

Southside Fossils - Fran Walker

The first annual Over 50 Baseball ALL STAR GAME was played on July 8th at Denver's All City Stadium. The league was divided into National and American Divisions. The North Stars, Gray Sox, and Fossils made up the National Division and was the home team. The American Division team was made up of the Ancient Mariners, Coots, and Bears. Congratulations to managers Mike Claps (North Stars) and David Lasswell (Ancient Mariners) for guiding their respective teams to first and second place in the standings as of the All Star cutoff date (June 20th). They were both rewarded by being appointed as All Star Game managers. The National Division won the game 16-6, and Pat Bradley of the Fossils was given the MVP award (an acrylic plaque) in a close vote at the conclusion of the game. All participants received commemorative NABA All Star T-Shirts. Special thanks go out to Jan Lasswell for keeping the scorebook, Brad Coldiron (NABA CEO) for operating the scoreboard and acquiring the stadium, Howard Rollin for announcing the game, and Joe Naporella & Frank Beasley for umpiring.

The following players were voted in by their teammates and comprised the National Division:

North Stars - Dave Bray, Fred Searle, Steve Coble, Warren Coble, & Tom Orin

Colorado Gray Sox - Al Bucholtz, Rich Maes, Eric Hall, and Jim Bentley (Al Malecha and Jim Ryken participated as assistant coaches)

Southside Fossils - Pat Bradley, Mike Price, & Tom Hall

The following players were voted in by their teammates and comprised the American Division:

Ancient Mariners - Phil Cummings, Phil Towe, Dave Blakely, and Billy Hufford

DENVER PUBLIC SCHOOLS FIELDWORK PROJECT DAY

KNAPP ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, 500 S. UTICA ST. (2 blocks south of Alameda, just east of Sheridan Blvd)

7:30 AM - 12:30 PM

What looked like a 4 or 5 hour job, took less than 2 hours. Although Denver Public School officials were quite pleased with the results of the sodding of 80,000 square feet, the turnout by Over 50 Baseball left something to be desired. In fact, one team did not have any representation at all. Don't be surprised if the NABA's National Office takes action against certain teams. For those of you who did participate, a hearty "job well done" is in order. As a matter of fact, the Ancient Mariners had the largest contingency of all 40 and over & 50 and over teams. You see, giving back to the community didn't hurt one bit, and the beverages and lunches that were supplied by Options Catering really hit the spot! Let's even do better the next time.

END OF REGULAR SEASON

AUGUST 22 - SEPTEMBER 26/OCTOBER 3

DOUBLE ELIMINATION PLAYOFF TOURNAMENT

In order to finish the playoffs in a timely manner, the following unique double elimination format will be used:

In all rounds of the playoffs, the highest seeded team will be the home team, unless the highest seeded team has already lost a game and as the winner of the loser's bracket is challenging the lone remaining undefeated team for the championship. In that situation only, the highest seeded team will be the visitor. If the highest seeded team wins that game and forces a final championship playoff, they will then earn the right to become the home team in the final game. Seeding is determined by the final regular season standings. Once a team has lost any two games, they will be eliminated from the playoffs. If any playoff game date is postponed (rain, field condition, etc.), the playoffs will continue through October 3rd, which will be the last available emergency backup date.

1. During the first round of the playoffs (8/22), the #1 seed will be home team versus the #6 seed, #2 will be home team versus #5, and #3 will be home team versus #4.

2. During the second round (8/29), the highest seeded winning team from the first round will play the lowest seeded losing team from the first round, but it will not play a repeat of a first round game. In the other two games, the other two winning teams will play each other, and the other two losing teams will play each other. At the end of this round, at least one and possibly two teams will be eliminated from further competition.

3. During the third round (9/12), if there are four teams in the loser's bracket (with 1 loss each), the highest seeded team (within the loser's bracket) will play the lowest seeded team (also within the loser's bracket) unless it is a repeat of the prior round. The other two teams in the loser's bracket will also play. Otherwise, there would be only two teams in the loser's bracket which would play each other. If there are two teams in the winner's bracket (still undefeated), they will play each other. If there is only one undefeated team in the winner's bracket, that team will receive a bye during this round and the next round as well. At the end of this round, only three teams will "still be in the hunt."

4. During the fourth round (9/19), the last two remaining teams in the loser's bracket will play, and the undefeated team will receive a bye. The undefeated team may accept to play an exhibition game against the highest seeded eliminated team during this bye week to keep that team "sharp."

5. During the fifth round (9/26), the winner of the loser's bracket will play the remaining undefeated team. If the undefeated team wins, they win the league championship. If the winner of the loser's bracket wins, both teams will start a brand new 3-inning game (after a 10 minute break) to determine the league championship. If, for example, the winner of the loser's bracket is winning the first game by a wide margin after 5 or 6 innings, the presently undefeated team (by their manager's decision) may stop the game and accept the loss, and transfer any complete remaining innings to the final playoff championship game. In other words, if the first game is stopped after 5 innings, the next and final game would also be 5 innings instead of only 3. Only 10 total scheduled innings (excluding extra innings necesssary to break a tie game) will be allocated for the final championship game day. However, if both managers agree, the second game may be played up to a full seven innings in length.
